There are good artists and there are awesome artists. Dylan Cole is definitely the latter. He is a leading matte painter and concept artist, specializing in work for film, television, and video games. Today, he’s our artist in the spotlight.
If you ‘ve seen films such as LOTR:Return of the King, Van Helsing, The Aviator… you have already seen some of this work. You can read his entire resume here. Quite an amazing list huh?
Dylan uses photoshop for all of his paintings in combination with a Wacom Intuos 3, 6″ x 11″ tablet. He also does some 3D work and for that he uses Cinema 4D.
If you’re interested in learning some of his techniques he uses in matte painting, then you might be interested in some of his DVD’s. Dylan made 3 DVD’s: introduction to landscape painting, introduction to cityscape matte painting and advanced digital matte painting.
Let’s take a look at some of his creations. I’ve made a list of some of his work but don’t forget to visit his website for more pictures. On his website you can find matte paintings, sketches/concepts and traditional paintings.
