Beautiful Illustrations Of Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is the body of myths and legends belonging to the ancient Greeks concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. Greek mythology has exerted an extensive influence on the culture, the arts, and the literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language. The Greek mythology is actually pretty interesting and it can be a great source of inspiration. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of beautiful illustrations of Greek gods, goddesses and other mythical creatures.

why does the last one of Icarus have a cross hanging from his neck, that is fucking stupid and it makes me ever so angry that some ignorant fool would make an ancient greek mythological character into a christian. BULLSHIT.

02.22.10

No Sisyphus or Orpheus? D:

02.22.10

Just like Gods should look, not all bloody and nailed to a cross.

02.22.10

oh i love greek mythology
thanks a lot mate :)

02.22.10

Know what sucks? When people start drawing EVERYTHING like a damn video game character. Be more creative!

02.22.10

I finally decided to write a comment on your blog. I just wanted to say good job. I really enjoy reading your posts.

Very cool! Would love to see more stuff like this

Also Noob I believe its a collaboration between Icarus and an Angel so that’s probably why there is a cross

02.22.10

I agree, n00b! That’s just stupid and it pisses me off.

Try Wonder Woman series back to 1980s, they made lot of nice reference to Zeus and its family. Learn quite a lot about them! Fun to read!

They even use Laptop!

n00b and jess – don’t get so uppety and just appreciate the art. There are any number of reasons that the cross could have been there, the artist might not have been “trying to make Icarus Christian” for one thing – to me it didn’t say Christian – it actually looked a little bit punky to me along with the hair. For another thing, the cross as a symbol was around for over a thousand years before Christianity adopted it as their main symbol – At the birth of Christianity the Christian symbol was actually a fish. Are you going to complain that some of the Poseidon pictures have been “made Christian” because they could have included fish?
Just enjoy the art.
Great stuff by the way :)

these just look like final fantasy characters, not impressed.

02.22.10

Was that a christian cross? I thought it looked more like Thor’s Hammer…

02.22.10

it seems genzoman owns, the rest is no match for him/her

02.22.10

A lot of these are kind of terrible IMO. genzoman’s are good though of course. But the last one is by far the best. n00b has a good point though, lol. Oh well.

Responding to (Lalo Marquez)

“Just like Gods should look, not all bloody and nailed to a cross.”

Jesus was nailed to the cross not for Himself but for you. He rose from the dead and has the highest name above every name not only in this age but in the ages to come. To the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

God is the God of gods. Everything that claims to be a god and is not, will perish shortly. Remember these words.

…And this is exactly why I’m fed up with religion.

02.22.10

I hate this style. Technically well done but tasteless, boring and seen 100000000 times before.

02.22.10

regarding the first comment on the cross around Icarus’ neck – the cross was a symbol for many cultures before it became the symbol for Christianity….in this instance it may have been used to denote another type of symbolism.
(From its simplicity of form, the cross has been used both as a religious symbol and as an ornament, from the dawn of man’s civilization. Various objects, dating from periods long anterior to the Christian era, have been found, marked with crosses of different designs, in almost every part of the old world. India, Syria, Persia and Egypt have all yielded numberless examples, while numerous instances, dating from the later Stone Age to Christian times, have been found in nearly every part of Europe. The use of the cross as a religious symbol in pre-Christian times, and among non-Christian peoples, may probably be regarded as almost universal, and in very many cases it was connected with some form of nature worship. (The Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed., 1910, Vol. 7, pg. 506. Emphasis ours.)

02.22.10

Awesome pictures. And on a side note, why can’t people just keep their religious beliefs to themselves? It’s not that much to ask for, if we wanted to know about them, we’d ask you.

02.22.10

Why does the picture of Hermes have him wearing a leather jacket and smoking. Calm down, it’s artistic interpretation, it’s supposed to be modernized. Calm down and stop overreacting please.

02.22.10

Not impressed…?

dif… bjk, bak-grbj…
I’d kill to be this good! This is insane!

I can understand not being original, but not impressed…?

…I’ll just curl into a ball and cry myself to sleep. I will never attain any skill in life…

02.22.10

I like posien and hades pics best, Here is a funny joke I saw about greek mythology http://ponderingstuff.com/2010/02/05/greek-mythology-is-such-a-bureaucracy/

02.22.10

If an illustration reflects the meaning of things, 90% of these illustrations are off. If the subject was teutonic gods they would be fine I guess, but it’s not…

02.22.10

Nice!! These illustrations proves that designers imagination can go anywhere :)

02.22.10

really surprised theres no thor up there

02.22.10

these are so col how did you guys learn to draw so good

02.22.10

Nasty, Thor is a part of Norse mythology, not Greek. Though it would be entertaining to see a collection of Norse art as well.

And as for the complaints about the art being “too video-gamy,” its still impressive and the artists were influenced by the current culture. Our current culture now emphasizes this particular type of art among some. And, considering the amount of reinterpretations of the art before this current gallery (which did display quite a bit of talent), this is still a break from the norm.

02.22.10

All of the complaints about the Christian Icarus lead to another question… Why is he so old? The Ovid story explains him as such a young and ignorant child. He’s supposed to be like, ten ;3
